Ghevond Alishan’s scientific-literary heritage includes his scientific publications of Armenian medieval manuscripts, historical-geographical and historical studies, literary-religious translations, fiction and poems. Alishan originally planned to present all the regions of Historical Armenia in separate volumes, but managed to publish just four of them: “Shirak” (1881), “Sisvan” (1885) dedicated to Cilicia, “Ayrarat” (1890) and dedicated to Syunik “Sisakan” (1893). Although these are historical-geographical works, they are however written in the artistic style peculiar to Alishan. He paid special importance to writing about the historical and heroic events related to the places of those geographical areas.

Sacred trees had different meanings and therefore different purposes. It was important not only to preserve them in reality but also to ensure their existence and growth by supernatural means. Trees were thought to have magical properties: people made pilgrimages, offered sacrifices, made offerings, prayed for healing, for having descendants, and begged for help and protection from harmful natural phenomena, and so on, through various rituals. Supernatural power was attributed to the objects made of wood of sacred trees and even to the pieces of those trees, which protected people from all evil and brought success acting as amulets.

The line “There’s no brighter forehead than that of Narekatsi and Kuchak” in the poem “I Love My Sweet Armenia’s Sun Flavored Word”, published in 1922, was written by Yeghishe Charents at the time when Nahapet Kuchak’s original ashugh (minstrel) literary works were unknown to science, so it’s quite natural to assume that when speaking about Kuchak, Charents had in mind the hayrens (an old form of Armenian folk poetry). One of the important fundamental issues of Armenian historiography is the periodization of Armenian history, which undoubtedly contributes to the systematized presentation of the historical past of Armenia and the Armenian people, to the improvement of the level of scientific research and to the disclosure of historical truth. The rich written heritage of Armenian historiographers gives grounds to affirm that attempts to periodize the history of Armenia were undertaken from the very beginning.

When determining the time of creation of medieval historiographical monu¬ments, the authors’ own evidence is of primary importance. On this basis, “History of Armenia” by Agathangelos, since the 5th century, has been traditionally considered the first Armenian historiographical work and was dated back to the 4th century. However, the evidence of historians sometimes does not correspond to the reality.

The forerunner of the Armenian volunteer movement was the fedayeen movement, which arose in Western Armenia at the end of the 19th century as a stronghold of armed resistance against the Ottoman enslavers. The volunteer movement was the continuation of the national liberation struggle and was driven by the aspiration of the Armenians to liberate Western Armenia from Ottoman oppression. The formation of the movement was also supported by the favorable position of Tsarist Russia, the authorities of which encouraged it in every possible way.

The Karabakh dialect is one of the most distinctive Armenian dialects. Alongside original Armenian words, it contains a substantial number of borrowings from Persian, which have Iranian origin as well as Arabic and Turkic. This is quite natural, given the geographical proximity of Artsakh to the northern regions of Iran and intensive contacts with Iranian state and administrative structures during the period of melikdoms.

In the result of the conducted research, we added the sixth branch to the five ones of the ruling royal princes of Syunik – branch of princes of the province of Arevik. The basis for this was the inscription on the khachkar installed in the southern corner of the eastern wall of the Church of St. Stepanos in the village of Vank restored in 1554, Meghri region. This inscription, dated 902, mentions “Lord Smbat”. According to the research and purchase contracts of the Tatev Monastery for the period from 839 to 891, the title of “Lord” was borne by diocesan bishops and throne princes. The same Smbat is mentioned on the khachkar, dated 911, which was erected in the rural area of Lichkvaz in the region of Meghri.

In Indo-European studies, the existence of fraternities of young warriors was restored; they, under the guidance of mentors, were engaged in hunting and plundering and lived in the outlying territories of the tribe for several years. Only after this, having undergone the initiation ritual, the young men could become full members of the tribe, get married, and own property. These brotherhoods played a key role in the spread of Indo-Europeans throughout Eurasia.
